The Barcelona City Hall is located on Placa de Sant Jaume (St. James Square) in the Gothic area of the Old Town.
St. James Square is the centre of government for both the local and regional government. As such, it is often the venue for celebrations and political demonstrations.

The home of the Government of Catalonia (Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya) is located directly across the square from the Barcelona City Hall.
Placa de Sant Jaume was at one time the location of a Roman Forum.
